The FEG PA-63 pistol was developed in Hungary in the early 1960s at the FEG factory and adopted by the Hungarian army in 1963. The PA-63 is based on the renowned German Walther PP pistol. For the Hungarian armed forces, the FEG PA-63 was chambered for the Soviet 9x18 pistol cartridge, adopted by the Warsaw Pact countries. The FEG PA-63 pistol proved to be a successful model, quite reliable in operation, easy to handle, and convenient to maintain, as well as being quite compact and lightweight. The FEG PA-63 pistol served in the Hungarian Army from 1963 to 1996 and was also used by the Hungarian police.

The FEG PA-63 pistol, manufactured by Femaru Fegyver es Gepgyar RT, remains in limited service with the Hungarian Army, even after the adoption of the more modern FEG Model P9RC, a copy of the FN Browning High Power pistol with a double-action trigger. Several modifications of the original FEG PA-63 pistol were created, primarily for the civilian market, many of which are still in production. Some of these modifications differ from the basic model in caliber, while others differ in size and material. Export versions are chambered in 7.65mm Browning and 9mm Short. The military-grade PA-63 differs from commercial versions in the color of its frame, which is made of untreated aluminum alloy.

The PA-63 pistol operates on a blowback-operated system. The barrel has 6 right-hand grooves. The slide is held in the fully forward position by a recoil spring located on the barrel. The trigger mechanism is a hammer-fired, double-action mechanism with an exposed hammer. The safety lever is located on the left side of the slide. When the safety is engaged, the hammer is automatically released from the cocked position. The slide is made of gunmetal, and the frame is made of a lightweight aluminum alloy. For partial disassembly, the trigger guard is pulled down, similar to the Walther PP pistol. The PA-63 pistol is fed from a single-stack box magazine. The magazine release is located in front of the grip plate, on the upper left side of the frame. The sights are open, non-adjustable, and consist of a fixed front sight and a rear sight secured in a dovetail groove.
